Jets Ink WR Mike Williams & Other News

On Tuesday, March 19th, the Jets signed former Chargers WR Mike Williams to a 1 year/$15 million dollar deal. Diehard Jets fan ‘NYJ_Matt’ as known on X, door-dashed Williams a breakfast sandwich that Williams stated he “knew a couple days before.” It grabbed national media attention and even Williams stated jokingly “this is what got the deal done right here” (Referring to the breakfast sandwich).

More on Williams. He is a big, strong, physical WR. He makes the tough catches, the over defenders/multiple defenders catches, the one-handed catches, and so on and so forth. Williams, since 2018 is averaging 15.8 yards per reception which ranks first among WRs with at minimum 250 receptions (stat muse). Williams played in only 3 games last season due to a torn ACL he suffered in a week 3 win vs the Minnesota Vikings. Williams, who accumulated 19 catches, 249 yards and one touchdown, was looking very good for those three weeks before the injury once again plagued his season. Injuries are always a concern with Williams, but he has played 75 games from 2018-2022 (not inc. the three from last season).

However, it goes deeper than just games played. Hamstring in 2020, AC joint in 2021, High Ankle/Broke Back in 2022. Hence why the Jets gave him a one-year prove-it deal, high-risk, high-reward. If Williams stays healthy, the Jets are getting a ballhawk, someone who can get-up and make big, physical, tough catches and gives Garrett Wilson a little break from having to do everything. Overall, I am very ecstatic about this move. Is Williams a top 10-15 WR in the league? No, but he gives the Jets and QB Aaron Rodgers (also returning from injury) a solid #2 weapon to further enhance this offense that ranked 30th in passing yards and 31st in total yards.

Other News

The Jets also made some other moves, re-signing Punter Thomas Morstead (who now dawns the number #6), DT Solomon Thomas and Kicker Greg “the leg” Zuerlein. Other moves inc. DL Javon Kinlaw, DT Leki Fatu, OG John Simpson, and LT Tyron Smith who hasn’t played a full-season since 2015, however whenever he is on the field playing, he is absolutely fantastic, allowing 18 pressures, three sacks on 536 pass-blocking plays (according to Pro Football Focus) He started 13 games, he allowed a pressure-rate of 3.4 which is third-best among qualified tackles. I was “Iffy” on Smith because of the injury concern, but if we can get 13 starts of that then I am all for it. The Jets also swung a trade with the Baltimore Ravens, acquiring (and reuniting) OL Morgan Moses. Moses, coming back to the Jets who played here in 2021 was very very productive in 2024 (and 21’ with his first stint with the Jets.) Moses, had a 5.6% pressure rate, and 3.30s average time to pressure (Micheal Nania/X). Only making, $5.5 million, and you pick-swap 4th and give up a 6th. Phenomenal Job, Joe Douglas. Phenomenal. Jadeveon Clowney met with the Jets Wednesday to help solidify the DL/Edge room after losing stud Bryce Huff to the Eagles. Clowney, 31, had 71 pressures and 9.5 sacks last season for the Baltimore Ravens. Would be a great signing.

Draft

With the Jets signing Tyron Smith and solidifying the offensive line, it is not sure-fire the Jets take an OL with the 10th pick. They are currently favored to select Georgia Tight End Brock Bowers (+250 on FanDuel.) I have been wanting Brock for months. Would be an awesome draft-pick.
