Mets Sign This 2023 All-Star DH to Bolster The Lineup

The Mets have been low-key this offseason, and with them staying on the down low besides being involved in the Yoshinobo Yamamoto sweepstakes, Earlier in the offseason they were “eyeing” one of the best bats on the market J.D Martinez but as we’ve progressed into the latter stages of spring camp the Mets and Martinez have “mutual interest” but the organization wants young DH Mark Vientos. Jon Heyman of the New York Post stated that Martinez “likes the idea” of joining the Mets, the seasoned veteran’s price came down as his free agency market continued to drag out and the Mets came in and signed him to a 1 year $12M deal with him getting $4.5M this year and the rest thru deferrals that come about in 2034 and end in 2038. Martinez, 36, was a free agent after putting up phenomenal numbers in 2023 with the Dodgers, and he fits what the Mets need in a DH, he provides little to no flexibility for playing the field, but it doesn’t affect his value, as his bat makes him a very valuable asset to the Mets as the DH spot has always been a black hole since it came to the NL. Martinez had a great profile in 2023 having solid batted ball metrics with iffy swing decisions, but his numbers were atop the league, and doing so in his late 30s makes it even more impressive, let’s take a look at them now.

J.D Martinez’s 2023 Profile:

As you can see above, Martinez struggled with some swing decisions but when he makes contact, it’s loud, as he is among the top players in the league when it comes to the batted ball metrics. Whiff issues are there but I feel like it’s not 100% the biggest deal in the world, if he can continue to be in the top-end side of batted ball metrics this year it wouldn’t be worrisome, but if he struggles to hit the ball this year (nothing suggests but just a scenario) it would be worrisome.
