Yankees to Pursue 2023 Cy Young Winner

Late last night, reports surfaced that Blake Snell’s market is much different than earlier anticipated, and he reportedly could look for a shorter deal with a higher average annual value.

Since the Yankees missed out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, they have been in the center of the pitching market, being interested in Snell, Montgomery, and Bieber and Cease via trade. I think if they are going to make a big move for a starter, it would be Blake Snell. He isn’t costing you as much as you anticipated, not to say he’ll be cheap, but it would be a great fit for the Yankees to go into the 2024 season with the two reigning Cy Young award winners as your top two starters. If pitchers like Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes can get back to 2022 production or close to it, suddenly you’re looking at probably the best rotation in the game.

What would it cost?

With the reports that Snell wants a shorter term deal with a high AAV, and opt outs, my offer to Snell would be around a 5-Year $150 Million with opt outs after year 3. This could end up being towards the top of his market that he gets, though we don’t have much information on current contract talks. One negative this would show is the Yankees losing draft picks and international bonus money because Snell has the Qualifying Offer attached to him.
