BREAKING: The Jets select OL Olu Fashanu at pick 11, and leaving many surprised. Connor Hughes of The Athletic stated that the Jets never “considered Brock Bowers here [pick 11]” and that it was all a big smokescreen. Hughes also stated the Jets “made an attempt to move up, but were unsuccessful.

Who is Olu Fashanu?

Olu, a 21 year old, 6’6” 317 lbs Offensive Tackle out of Penn State University. Olu runs a 4.33-second 40 yard dash. Fashanu started 12 games at left tackle for the Nittany Lions last season and allowed a whopping ZERO sacks in 382 pass-blocking snaps. Fashanu, in his college career has played 1,285 snaps, allowed ZERO sacks, ONE Qb hit (NYJetsTFMedia // X)

Press conference

After the Jets selected Olu, General Manager Joe Douglas and Held Coach Robert Saleh had a press-conference and Joe stated “Olu will be playing left tackle.” Joe also praised Olu, saying how he’s “a beast” and “we’re so pumped to have him.” The Jets signed Tyron Smith earlier this offseason, so drafting Olu and having him work/practice with Tyron will only benefit him in becoming the future franchise LT.

My thoughts

I will not lie, I wanted Tight end Brock Bowers or a Wide receiver, however, protection for QB Aaron Rodgers is most important and will be needed, especially if Tyron Smith for example (who hasn’t played a full season since 2015) gets an injury. Always good to have depth. And while the Jets were unsuccessful trading up, they traded down a pick, got pick 11, along with picks 129, and 157 for 10 and 203. Wow, that is simply fantastic work by Joe Douglas. I hope the Jets are able to trade for a second-round pick and take a WR. The Jets have a young and phenomenal core on the OL with Alijah Vera-Tucker, Joe Tippman and Olu Fashanu. Surrounded by veteran leaders like Morgan Moses, Tyron Smith, and John Simpson. This line is the best it’s ever been and is ready to roll. The future is bright for now, and the future of the New York Jets.
