The Islanders have drafted Matthew Schaefer first overall in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Schaefer, 17, becomes the Isles newest first overall selection, the last being in 2009 when the team took John Tavares. Schaefer is a game-changing defensemen who will shape Islanders hockey for years to come. The 17 year old is comparable to players like Quinn Hughes or Cale Makar. Schaefer only played 17 games this season for the Erie Otters in the OHL, but early on he separated himself as the best player in this draft, and the Islanders who won the draft lottery with just 3.5% odds, are more than happy to select him first overall. Welcome to Long Island, Matthew Schaefer.
