Hours before the start of the NHL Draft, the Islanders have traded defenseman Noah Dobson to the Montreal Canadiens, and signing an 8 year extension that will pay him $9.5 Million annually.

This saga comes to an end after weeks of reporting about Dobson’s future, his $11 Million contract ask was too much for the Islanders to bare. The Islanders and Mathieu Darche do cash in though, acquiring the 16th and 17th overall selections in tonight’s draft, as well as young winger Emil Heineman. The Islanders I feel could’ve gotten more for Dobson, but this return will suffice given what they wanted.

Darche’s tenure sure did start with a bang, and we could see some even more fireworks tonight at the NHL Draft in Los Angeles. Not only do the Islanders hold the first overall selection, but it has been reported that they will likely attempt to use the acquired picks from Montreal to move up to select James Hagens. If they find a way to do that, it will be an exciting night.
