The Rafael Devers trade leaves MLB dumbfounded.

In a very interesting turn of events, the Boston Red Sox are trading star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for a package including Jordan Hicks, pitching prospect Kyle Harrison, and more.

This comes as a huge surprise to many, as Devers inked a 10-year $313 million extension in 2023, and is dealt to San Francisco just two years later. This comes off the back of a very public conversation around Rafael Devers’ defensive future in Boston. After the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman and called up Kristian Campbell to start the season, the Red Sox wanted Devers to play first base, which he said publicly that he would not do. From that moment, it was a very fractured relationship between Boston and Devers, which is likely what ultimately led to the trade. The Red Sox have mainly been DHing him, but has been playing third base more since Alex Bregman went down with an injury.

Buster Posey, take a bow. The new Giants President of Baseball operations has had a great first season on the job, currently sitting 41-30 and just 1 game behind the Dodgers in the NL West, and now go out and acquire Rafael Devers, a much needed addition now that Matt Chapman has gone down with injury.

The comparison to the Luka Doncic trade that occurred ahead of the NBA trade deadline is hyperbolic, like the Doncic trade, he wasn’t being shopped, but had a deliberate destination in mind and there were no rumors about a potential deal for this player until he was dealt. It isn’t exactly the same, but it’s the closest thing we’ve seen in the MLB in terms of an unexpected blockbuster, probably since 2021 when Max Scherzer and Trea Turner were traded from the Nationals to the Dodgers. 4 years later, we have somewhat of a compatible deal. Devers is being dealt to San Francisco for Hicks, Harrison, James Tibbs, and Jose Bello.
