Mathieu Darche to be next Islanders General Manager

On the eve of Memorial Day weekend, the New York Islanders are finalizing a deal to name Tampa Bay Lightning executive Mathieu Darche as their next general manager, their 7th in franchise history.

Darche, 48, is a former player, was the assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Tampa Bay Lightning, played a big role in the Lightning winning back-to-back Stanley Cup’s in 2020 and 2021, and appearing in a 3rd in 2022. Darche is a first time GM, he previously interviewed for positions in Vancouver, Chicago, Montreal, and Pittsburgh before landing the Islanders job. The Islanders seemingly will not be hiring a President of Hockey Operations, so Darche will report directly to Ownership. Darche will have many key decisions to make, including a 1st overall selection, as well as the contracts of Noah Dobson, Simon Holmstrom and Alex Romanov among others.
