The New York Rangers have extended up and coming star Alexis Lafreniere on a 7 year contract worth $52.15 million. The deal is worth $7.45 million per year.
Lafreniere, 23, is off to a fast start this season. He has 4 goals and 3 assists in 7 games. He is on pace to be point per game for the first time in his young career. Should he accomplish this or come close, the contract will be well worth it in the future.
Keep in mind, Alexis is doing all of this without power play time. All of his production has came at even strength, making his numbers all the more impressive. Last season, he ranked 17th in goals at even strength across the entire league. His 51 points ranked 39th. Those are very encouraging numbers for a 22 year old who played very little on the man advantage.
Lafreniere is one of the Rangers better forwards already, and he is part of one of the best lines in the NHL alongside Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck.
Among the 2020 draft class, Lafreniere is first in games (305), second in goals (79), fourth in assists (76), and third in points (155). The former number one overall pick should be a vital part for the Rangers in the future, and locking him up and a team friendly deal is something that had to be done.
