Matvei Michkov to join Flyers next season

It has been reported that Flyers top prospect Matvei Michkov is leaving SKA in the KHL and will be joining the Philadelphia Flyers next season. Michkov played 47 games for HK Sochi and recorded 19 goals with 41 total points. This doesn’t come as a complete surprise, as we’ve been hearing rumblings that Michkov will come over for the last few months.

The 2023 7th overall pick fell in the draft due to his contract in the KHL. Going into the draft it was assumed that Michkov wouldn’t be able to come to North America until after the contract, which would’ve ended after the 2025-26 season. A time most teams wouldn’t have wanted to wait. But the Flyers took the risk, they believed they could get Michkov over sooner, and it helps that he wanted to be a Flyer. They somehow managed to get him over after just one year. Michkov, 19, is destined for NHL stardom, he will likely assume a top 6 role with the Flyers next season, and will no doubt be one of the players for the Calder Trophy. It’ll be interesting to see how this will impact the Flyers offseason plans. We will have to see how this one develops as we get to the draft.
