Isles To Pursue Nikolaj Ehlers

Ahead of the 2024 NHL Draft, it has been reported that the Islanders are seeking two things. First, a dynamic top-six forward. Secondly, more cap space by trading away expensive contracts. There is one forward the Islanders have been linked to a lot since their season ended, and according to The Hockey News, recently have engaged in trade talks with the Jets, for Nikolaj Ehlers.

The 28 year old Dane put up 25 goals 61 total points in 82 games last season. Something Ehlers as not been able to do throughout his career is stay healthy, but he was able to do that last season. Ehlers is due for a new contract after next season, and he has no interest in signing an extension with the Jets. And the Islanders are a very good fit for him as we near the draft.

Ehlers provides what the Islanders want, scoring, speed, and a consistent linemate to Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal. Ehlers is a great fit alongside them on the Islanders top line. He helps a lot on the power play as well, as he could help the Islanders a lot on offensive zone entries, something they struggled with at times last season. But with Ehlers making $6 Million, the Islanders will have to put together a solid package to acquire him. Here’s what I think it takes:

The Trade

Winnipeg Acquires: C Jean-Gabriel Pageau, RFA Rights to F Simon Holmstrom, 2024 2nd Round Pick

New York Acquires: F Nikolaj Ehlers

The fit with Ehlers and the Islanders makes a lot of sense, but there will be lots of teams vying for his services. Other teams in the Metropolitan division alone have expressed interest, Carolina and Washington among them. Ehlers is a great fit for the Islanders, and I think Lou may be able to trade for him and extend him soon after at around $6.5-$7 Million.

Lines After Trade:

Ehlers-Horvat-Barzal

Tsyplakov-Nelson-Palmieri

Lee-Cizikas-Engvall

Ishkakov-MacLean-Fasching
