The Islanders announced today that they have signed F Maxim Tsyplakov to a 1-year entry level contract, beginning next season. Tsyplakov had at least 12 teams vying for his services, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers, yet he lands on Long Island.

Tsyplakov is coming off a pretty good season with the Spartak Moscova in the KHL, where he recorded 31 goals and 47 points in 65 games. Tsyplakov is a 25 year old winger who was regarded as the top European free agent this summer. The Islanders seemingly got a very good deal with Tsyplakov and there is definitely a wide range of outcomes for where he plays in his first NHL season. He is a left handed shot and a natural RW, he’s a solid skater and has a good shot as well. As with most moves by Lamoriello, this signing came out of virtually nowhere, nobody really talked about the Islanders as a potential fit for him, he could be a solid addition to the team for a cost effective price.

An interesting part of the signing of Tsyplakov is his contract itself, Lou Lamoriello gave Tsyplakov “Schedule A” Bonuses meaning he can earn more money if he meets certain marks of goals, points, top 6 ice time, among others. This could be very interesting as we get closer to the season and could mean he plays a potential top 6 role with the Islanders.
