Thursday morning Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns announced that Kodai Senga the expected ace of the organization has a moderate right posterior capsule strain in his shoulder, and the ball club does not expect him to be ready for opening day, and didn’t give an exact timeline, now the question comes into play of what do the Mets do from here, according to reports Mets are not expecting to make a huge splash, and this why Jose Butto has a really solid chance to fill Senga’s void and produce quality innings for the Mets. Let’s look into Butto’s profile.
Butto’s Profile:

As you can see above the numbers from Butto in 2023 were solid, as he posted a 3.64 ERA with a 96 stuff+ with an ability to get whiffs, and soft contact, which would be solid for the organization if he could continue that into the upcoming season, he could be a solid option. The big wonder for Butto is his control, as he posted a 12.8 BB% and a 42.7% Zone% as you can see above, so if he can figure out his control as spring training gets underway, he could be in the rotation on opening day. Butto will be in a hard competition with Tylor Megill and Joey Lucchesi, who both have good cases, but if the Mets are really in on the youth guiding the team, they should give Butto a shot to see if he can take it and run with it and possibly be a solid backend starter in the future.
