In the early morning of Sunday, January, 7th, a report came out from the New York Post’s Jon Heyman stated that the New York Mets have come to terms with LHP Sean Manaea on a 2-year deal worth around $28M with an opt-out, as the Mets looked and found a really solid depth option for the rotation and the bullpen for 2024. Manaea worked with driveline baseball to add velocity, and another pitcher a sweeper then he posted solid numbers down the stretch after the addition of the breaking pitch. Manaea, 31, was one of the better depth options on the remaining free-agent market for pitching, as he brings the ability to be a starter or reliever and give the club innings when needed. Let’s take a look deeper into his stats and profile:
Sean Manaea’s 2023 stats:
⁃ 117.2 IP
⁃ 25.7% K%
⁃ 8.4% BB%
⁃ 24.1 Whiff%
⁃ 7.2 Extension (96th percentile)
⁃ 95 ERA+
⁃ 4.44 ERA
⁃ 3.90 FIP
⁃ 91 Stuff+
Those stats are all-around league average except for the Extension but his pitch mix now is what could make him nasty in 2024. FB-CH-SL-SWP-SI, CU. His slider struggled the most with a -9 RV, and if you go back, it’s only been a positive RV pitch twice, in 2017, and 2019, so adding that sweeper to kinda replace his slider would be smart. Manaea’s fastball movement is pretty sick as it breaks 15.0 inches, 7.5 more inches than the league average according to Baseball Savant. Currently, he profiles as a 4-5 starter, and if he struggles a bullpen role could be in the cards for him if the Mets add some more depth.
