The Mets should explore this possible deal with the Marlins over this young right-handed starter.

After missing out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto who’s reportedly agreed to terms with the Dodgers, the Mets should look into trading for this young starter from their division. Edward Cabrera has been subject to trade rumors all season, and with the Mets not wanting to mortgage the farm for players with one year of control, it’s a different case with Cabrera who’s currently only 25 years of age, and won’t be a free agent till 2029, so trading for him is more than trading for a rental, it’s trading for a possible cornerstone of your rotation as his numbers this past year were phenomenal. But with all that it will cost a pretty penny, but it could be with MLB-ready players instead of prospects, but it seems like the Marlins do not want to add crazy amounts of money to their payroll. As I’ve previously stated Edward Cabrera’s underlying metrics were solid, let’s take a look at them.

Edward Cabrera’s 2023 season:

⁃ 99.2 IPs

⁃ 27.5% K%

⁃ 15.2% BB%

⁃ 30.9% Whiff%

⁃ 55.7% GB%

⁃ 106 ERA+

⁃ 4.24 ERA

⁃ 4.43 FIP

⁃ 102 Stuff+

His underlying metrics are solid, but his control has been a problem as he’s in the 1st percentile in BB%, which is not good. But with the Mets’ new pitching lab, they could bring him in and work on it, while also keeping his previous stuff that was valuable.

Edward Cabrera Mock Trade

Mets Send:

INF Mark Vientos

RHP Justin Jarvis (15th Prospect)

C Omar Narvaez (Mets eat 80% of his remaining salary)

Cash considerations

Marlins Send:

RHP Edward Cabrera

Both teams would fill needs, as the Marlins get a pitching prospect with a 2024 ETA according to MLB Pipeline, with a bat with good potential like Mark Vientos, while also getting a solid catcher which they desperately need to address for no salary, while the Mets add a young starter immediately into their rotation, for now and the future as Cabrera doesn’t hit free agency till 2029 and get a solid 3 for years to come.
