Of course, as everyone knows the Mets have a gap in the outfield, and with David Stearns and co prioritizing defense and run prevention Kevin Kiermaier seems like a perfect fit, with his ability on the defensive side and to top that good speed he makes a lot of sense for this subpar outfield room. A reason that Kiermaier could be interested in the Mets is that he would have the ability every day, Marte is older and won’t be able to play all 162, and Stewart is a 4th outfielder, but the big question is what would it mean for Nimmo. There’s a possibility if they bring in a defense-first center-fielder that they could move the homegrown star Brandon Nimmo to the corner outfield, which could keep him healthy, and if the Mets have any chance of making a run this year they need Nimmo healthy. Kevin Kiermaier put up really good numbers in 2023, with the bat, glove, and speed.
Kevin Kiermaier’s 2023 stats:
⁃ 408 PAs
⁃ .265/.322/.419
⁃ 8 HR/.154 ISO
⁃ .300 xwOBA
⁃ .345 xwOBACON
⁃ 13 OAA
⁃ 28.8 SprintSpeed (87th percentile)
⁃ 104 wRC+
⁃ 2.2 fWAR
Those numbers aren’t world-breaking, but they fit what the Mets need speed and defense, the bat is league average and can bring a little bit of pop, but on a 1-year deal, with a player option at the right price for this type of player it could help the organization a decent amount. Run prevention is key, pitching is a big part but defense also plays a decent amount into it, as the outfield defense has been horrendous, -7 OAA, -16 DRS last year, and adding a player with the defensive abilities like Kevin Kiermaier would be a good add to focus on run prevention as let alone by himself he would’ve given the Mets outfield defense a positive OAA this past year.
