Mets #4 prospect according to the MLB pipeline, Ronny Mauricio who was expected to be in the mix for the everyday 3rd base position, tore his ACL while running the bases during one of his winter ball games down in the Dominican Republic. It’s “very, very likely” that Mauricio’s injury will require surgery according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. The usual timeline for a torn ACL is 6-9 months, so barring any setbacks Mauricio should see the field at some point. And with that, the race for the 3rd base position narrows down a bit. Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, and newly signed Joey Wendle will all compete for the spot, but according to Andy Martino of SNY, the Mets will “likely” look for insurance at 3B, he also stated that he could see former Met Justin Turner as a potential fit. There are possibilities on this market for the Mets, they could look at lottery tickets like Jean Segura and Gio Urshela could both come on MiLB deals or cheap one-year contracts and get a chance to see if they still have it, if they do great you got a bargain signing for good production during the year, and if they don’t you simply just cut ties and move on.
