Earlier today, the Yankees acquired infield prospect Jorbit Vivas and left-hander Victor Gonzalez in exchange for former first round pick, infielder Trey Sweeney. The Dodgers, who needed two 40-man roster spots for Shohei Ohtani and Joe Kelly, inquired about this move with the Yanks yesterday.
Role for Gonzalez in the Yankee pen?
Gonzalez, 28, pitched to a 4.01 ERA last season for the LA Dodgers in 34 appearances, features three pitches in his mix, a four-seam fastball, a changeup, and a slider. He doesn’t get hit very hard, and induced ground balls at a 54.3% rate, which makes him a type of pitcher that the Yankees typically do good with. Gonzalez also underperformed some of his metrics, as he pitched to a 3.20 xERA and .220 xBAA. With Wandy Peralta as a free agent, Gonzalez could be the perfect LHP replacement in the middle of the bullpen.
Jorbit Vivas role?
I believe Vivas’ role in the Yankee organization is gonna be a depth player, especially because he’s already in AAA, he wasn’t great in AAA, but he’s still got developing time, and can be very useful as another LHH for the Yanks. Last season in the minors, Vivas hit .269/.381/.407 with an OPS of .788 in 506 at bats. He is an average defender at second base with an arm that’s not the best, but also not the worst.
Trey Sweeney was picked by the Yankees in the 2021 draft with the 20th overall pick. He made it up to AA Somerset by 2023, and hit .252/.367/.411 with an OPS of .790 in 100 games. He’s someone worth looking forward to, as he shows pop from the left side of the plate, and his potential on the defensive side of the ball at shortstop is pretty impressive.
