Let’s make this clear. This move does not take the Yankees out of the running for LF Juan Soto. This move is solely a depth move, and as of right now, we don’t know if Verdugo is getting flipped in a trade.
How will Verdugo fit in if he is not flipped?
Well, Brian Cashman has made it clear this off-season that he’s looking for two left-handed bats. Verdugo, 27, provides outfield versatility, and besides the stats, he brings a swagger that the Yanks don’t really get much. Over this past season, Verdugo slashed .264/.324/.421 with a wRC+ of 99. Verdugo also had 55 extra-base hits, which included 37 doubles, 5 triples, and 13 home runs, while driving in 55 runs.
Rare Red Sox-Yanks swap
This Alex Verdugo trade, where the Yanks gave up three right-handed pitching prospects (Fitts, Weissert, Judice) was only the ninth swap between the respective franchises, and the first since 2014, where they swapped Stephen Drew and Kelly Johnson. Will Alex Verdugo take Aaron Judge’s No. 99? Just kidding. Let’s see what happens in the coming days, regarding a Juan Soto trade, and also regarding the spot of Verdugo.
