Evolution of the Bills offense

The Bills offense has had its ups and downs through the Bills first 8 games of the season, the Bills stand at 5-3. 2nd in the AFC East. They won on Thursday night against Tampa Bay, in what seemed to be the Bills offense returning back to what it has been over the last few years.

Before Dawson Knox went down with injury, the Bills were one of the top teams in the NFL in terms of 12-personnel usage and two TE sets. This was effective for the Bills but not consistently, inconsistency from Knox lead to a lot of offensive struggles. Against Tampa, the Bills ran a similar type of offense that they had in recent years. This led to a huge game by Dalton Kincaid, who notched his first NFL TD and a big part of the Bills offense this week.

Gabe Davis elevated his game on Thursday. Having 87 yards and a touchdown on 9 catches. A new part that Davis developed last week, he became a huge threat underneath. In short yardage situations, Davis became a player that Allen could reply on which led to first downs and a touchdown, a change that we haven’t seen from Davis. Hence his nickname “Big Play Gabe”. Khalil Shakir has also emerged as a consistent contributor for this offence notching a career high 92 yards and 6 catches for the Bills. Becoming that option out of the slot is something the Bills have been trying to replicate since the departure of Cole Beasley.

Another aspect of the Bills offense that we are seeing resurface is Josh Allen’s importance in the run game. Something that the Hills have tried to limit from him this year. This is not a good thing. The Bills need to let Allen loose, and they did last week with 7 rushes for 41 yards and a touchdown. Something we haven’t seen from Allen as they have tried to put an emphasis on Allen in the pocket. The struggle in the offense could coincide with the lessening of Allen’s run game contributions.

The Bills face the Bengals on Sunday Night Football next week, the Bills if they continue the type of offense they had last week, they should have no issues getting past the Bengals and keeping up this consistency for the remainder of the season.
