Yankees split Astros; Questions surrounding Rodón and Severino

The Yankees 9-7 loss on Sunday to the Houston Astros concluded a split in the four-game set at Yankee Stadium. The Yanks head on the road to face the White Sox tomorrow. So, what’s some positives you can take away from this series? Well, let’s start with Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton. Before Stanton’s 0-6 showing in the loss Sunday, Stanton was 4-10 with a couple of long shots in three games. He’s seemingly hitting the ball much better. In the 0-6 showing, he struck out zero times and ended the game off with a 395 foot, 105 MPH flyout to center field. Not very lucky. The Yankees offense left 15 runners on base, though they scored 7 runs.

Questions surrounding Carlos Rodón, Luis Severino?

Rodón has struggled very badly in his first six games as a Yankee. He’s gone 1-4 with a 7.33 ERA, striking out less than a batter per inning, which just isn’t very like Rodón, the known strikeout pitcher. He left his start on Sunday with a hamstring injury, getting boo’d off the mound, and having given up five runs. It hasn’t looked to great for Carlos, and his next start is in question with a possible IL stint. Luis Severino just hasn’t found anything. Once a dominant force on the mound, Severino is 2-6 with a 7.74 ERA in 13 starts, with a WHIP at almost 2. He’s also struck out less than a hitter per inning, with 54 Ks in 61.2 innings pitched. Very unlike Sevy, who is known is a big strikeout pitcher himself. That’s two big question marks in the starting rotation, which got Nestor Cortes back on Saturday.

Severino’s next turn in the rotation is in doubt, but who can replace him? Well, the Yankees have a couple of options. Jhony Brito, who’s currently in the Yankee bullpen, or Randy Vasquez, who’s been pretty good when his name is called for the Yanks. We’ll find out, but it’s not looking good for the Bombers.
