Mets Trade Deadline Review:

The deadline has come and gone, and the Mets were extremely active moving players over the week. We already went over the Robertson/Escobar trades so we won’t break that one down. Let’s get right into it.

Deal 1: Max Scherzer to Texas

Mets Send

RHP Max Scherzer

Cash

Rangers Send

IF/OF Luisangel Acuña

The Mets sent aging starter who has struggled this year to Texas, for now their number 1 organizational prospect. This was a great deal for the Mets, yes the cash plays huge but the Steve Cohen Mets have been able to do this which is huge to fix the broken farm system. Acuña has stolen 42 bases in Double-A with a 121 wRC+, and has plus fielding, mainly SS/2B/CF

Grade: A++

Deal 2: Mark Canha to Brewers

Mets Send

OF/IF Mark Canha

Brewers Send

RHP Justin Jarvis

The 2nd move was a smaller one, when the Mets dealt OFer Mark Canha to a contending team in Milwaukee. RHP Justin Jarvis is a good arm, that was really good in Double-A but has yet to find his footing in Triple-A. And with his MLB ETA being next season, it was a smart move by the Mets FO.

Grade: B

Deal 3: Justin Verlander to Astros

Mets Send

RHP Justin Verlander

Cash

Astros Send

OF Drew Gilbert

OF Ryan Clifford

In a blockbuster deal that sent the Astros back their former ace Justin Verlander, in exchange for their #1 organizational prospect in Gilbert and their #4 in Clifford. This was a great deal by the Mets as they acquire two top 100 prospects in my eyes, that could be ready by next year. And another example of Cohen’s Mets eating huge dollar amounts, and bringing back great prospects.

Grade: A

Deal 4: Tommy Pham to DBacks

Mets Send

OF Tommy Pham

DBacks Send

IF Jeremy Rodriguez

Even though I felt like the Mets could have got more in a deal, it seems like the market didn’t warrant it. But at the end of the day they added a 17 year old DSL who has 104 wRC+ down there. Not much more to it.

Grade: C+

Deal 5: Dominic Leone to Angels

Mets Send

RHRP Dominic Leone

Cash

Angels Send

Jeremiah Jackson

With this one coming out at the buzzer it was one of the best deals by the Mets all trade deadline, acquiring a top 20/25 organizational prospect, for a bullpen arm they signed for nothing earlier in the year. Jackson, 23, profiles as a power first bat, with versatility. 15 HRs this year in AA to tag along with a .343 wOBA. Good move by the FO to find this deal and get it done.

Grade: A+

Deal 6: Bickford, Kolarek to Mets.

Mets Send

Cash

Dodgers Send

RHRP Phil Bickford

LHRP Adam Kolarek

Recently DFAed Bickford was picked up by the Mets via trade, tagging along is former Met minor league Kolarek. I like this move I think it provides more depth for the future with both being under team control.

Grade: B

Overall Deadline Grade: A

The Mets picked a direction, which past front offices and ownership for this team has failed to do, many will say the Mets are already ‘punting’ the 2024 season, which I believe is untrue. Max Scherzer’s leaked conversation with GM Billy Eppler and Owner Steve Cohen stating that both said the team will not being going all in next year is true, but doesn’t mean they are ‘punting’ it could very easily mean that they aren’t going to spend as much and focus on plugging some holes instead of buying superstars. Billy Eppler stated that the team won’t have the same odds next year, but will field a ‘competitive team’. But overall the Mets did a great job this deadline, netting multiple top 100 prospects, even clearing some money off.
