Mets Start The Selling, Moving David Robertson To The Marlins For Two Prospects.

As the Trade Deadline gets closer, late Thursday night the Mets showed that they will be sellers at the deadline. Starting off with moving veteran closer David Robertson who is having an elite year. While we’ve broken down the great year Robertson has had this year, I feel we shall break down what the Mets have received in return, so let’s get right into it.

#1 Marco Vargas:

Vargas has been killing the ball in the FCL, but he could easily make his way to Low-A by next season. He profiles as a plus bat, with great bat-to-ball skills with a beautiful swing from the left-handed side, he plays a versatile infield, 2nd base, Shortstop, 3rd base. His data has been really promising in the FCL:

.283/.457/.442/.

.898 OPS

23.5% BB% to 13.6% K% (1.73 BB/K)

.440 wOBA

144 wRC+

Very promising, and he is 10th in the FCL with his 144 wRC+.

Grades:

Hit: 55, Power: 45, Run: 50, Arm: 50, Field: 50, Fair Value/OVR: 50.

#2 Ronald Hernandez:

Hernandez who tagged along in the trade package that moved Robertson to Miami, is a defensive first catcher. His arm and field profile great, along with that his bat has been great this year, as data supports him with the bat this year:

.298/.464/.452

.916 OPS

23.2% BB% to 19.6% K%

.450 wOBA

149 wRC+

My big wonder with Hernandez is if he can sustain what he’s doing in Low-A and above, he struggled his first two years with the bat in the FCL but if he continues this he could be a nice backup catcher in the future.

Grades:

Hit: 50, Power: 40, Run: 30, Arm: 55, Field: 60, Overall: 45.

I feel like many fans of the Mets definitely overreacted that this was “a bad trade” Vargas profiles as a possible top 100 prospect in the near future, and Hernandez as a i stated before, with the Mets having Francisco Alvarez he could profile as a great defensive first backup catcher. I believe this was a fair deal, even though Robertson was a top reliever on the market, he’s 38, and a rental so many teams didn’t value him that high, even after the season he’s having.
