Mets Trade Deadline Outlook:

With the trade deadline looming the Mets have decisions to make after a subpar year, they have multiple veterans (on expiring contracts). So let’s get right into this.

On The Trade Block: #1 RHP David Robertson:

David Robertson has been a really good replacement to all-star closer Edwin Diaz after he suffered the injury they had a gaping hole and Robertson not just filled it, he’s been simply elite:

43.1 IP

28.2% K%

7.6% BB%

3.06 xERA

2.08 ERA

31.7 Whiff%

With these numbers he will be a highly sought after reliever, which means the Mets can drive up the price and listen among contenders, I believe personally that the price on Robertson should be, plus-raw power prospect, starting pitching prospect, under the age of 26 roster player. Mock Trade: (Picking suitor based on the need/best fit.)

Mets Acquire:

OF Jonny Deluca (19th Ranked Prospect In The Organization)

OF Jose Ramos

RHP Kyle Hurt

LHP Ben Harris

Dodgers Acquire

RHP David Robertson (Mets eat 90% of Robertson’s remaining salary)

In this deal both teams walk away happy, Mets acquire two young power bats with 2 younger pitching prospects, while the Dodgers walk away with a great new one-two punch between Evan Phillips and David Robertson.

On The Trade Block: #2 OF Tommy Pham

The Mets have two corner outfielders that could bring in nice returns in a trade deal, let’s start with the first one, Tommy Pham. Pham has been arguably the best Met hitter this year, after he signed his one-year deal this past off-season, the expectation was for him to DH vs LHP and be the 4th outfielder, but very quickly changed that narrative becoming an everyday guy. The analytics back him in every way:

.271/.355/.472

48.2% HardHit%

.391 xwOBA

129 wRC+

1.7 fWAR

And with these stats, he’s one of the hottest guys on the current market, and could bring back a nice haul to the Mets, with multiple contenders scratching for a corner outfielder with these numbers. Mock Trade (Picking suitor based on need/best fit)

Mets Acquire:

RHP Mark Church

OF Dustin Harris

RHP Winston Santos

Rangers Acquire:

OF Tommy Pham (Mets Retain 50% of the salary)

This trade is a little more favorable to the Mets, but I believe with the Rangers need in LF they will be really to pay a hefty price to beat out other potential suitors. The main piece going back to the Mets is Dustin Harris, who can play first-base/third-base/left-field. So there is a utility possibility there of him filling Pham’s spot next, he’s put up a 128 wRC+ with a OBP at .438 in Triple-A this season.

On The Trade Block: #3 OF Mark Canha

Canha contract with the Mets will be expiring this off-season, and with the team’s current struggles selling him off to net something back in return is a very smart idea. He won’t net as much of a return as Robertson, Pham will but getting something for a player that more than likely will not resign, would be nice. His numbers this year haven’t been anything spectacular but he’s been above-average. With his veteran leadership, he has been drawing trade interest. Let’s take a look at his stats:

.238/.338/.381

37.4% HardHit%

.321 xwOBA

105 wRC+

0.5 fWAR

The power hasn’t really been there, but everything else is right above-average which has other teams calling the Mets front office to work out a possible deal. I don’t believe the Mets could get much for him, but as I said previously its better to get something then nothing. Mock Trade: (Picking suitor based on need/best fit)

Mets Acquire:

INF Josh Hood

RHP Jean Munoz

INF/OF José Caballero

Mariners Acquire:

OF/INF Mark Canha (Mets retain the max you can retain.)

In this deal I think it’s definitely a fair deal. Mets eat huge amounts of salary and bring back two good prospects, and Caballero who is in the major leagues currently and is serving as a utility player, that has put up 1.7 fWAR this season, mainly cause of his defense and speed. Mariners targeted Canha in the past when he was a free agent, so it wouldn’t be super shocking if Canha stayed for the rest of his career in Seattle.

Listening To Offers On: Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Carlos Carrasco

The Mets ‘double ace’ system has not worked this year with both older veterans having down years, both have better as of late but it hasn’t been enough to will this team back into the hunt, but with huge salary’s and no trade clauses the Mets are put into a sticky predicament with them. Verlander is under contract for next year then a vesting option for the year after, Scherzer has a player option for next season. Carlos Carrasco is a maybe as he has struggled but with the Mets willing to eat $ there could be a situation where a team makes a low risk move if the Mets eat his salary and try and fix him for down the stretch. Mock Trades on all three of them: (Picking suitor based on need/best fit

Mets Acquire:

RHP Eric Silva

RHP Will Bednar

RHP Ryan Walker

OF Heilot Ramos

Giants Acquire:

RHP Justin Verlander (Mets Retain 80% of his salary.

RHP John Curtiss

As it remains unclear if the Mets will trade Verlander or he will even waive his no-trade clause to move to a different team. This deal would benefit both teams, Mets acquire 2 young pitching prospects, along with a bullpen arm with control, and a young power bat prospect. Giants acquire Justin Verlander (who really isn’t having a bad of year as many people make it out to be.) who has been stellar over his last 5/6 starts. John Curtiss tags along to also help their bullpen depth.

Mets Acquire:

INF/OF Otto Lopez

RHP Hagen Danner

RHP Trent Palmer

LHP Adam Macko

Blue Jays Acquire:

Max Scherzer (Mets retain 90% of his salary)

I personally feel like the Blue Jays are a great fit for Scherzer, and he could definitely help them make push towards October, while the Mets net a prospect that could make the opening day roster, and 2 younger right-handed pitchers, and a great young left-handed pitching prospect.

Mets Acquire:

RHP Trevor Martin

3B Kamren James

Rays Acquire:

RHP Carlos Carrasco (Mets retain 100% of his salary.)

RHP Dominic Leone

The Mets bring in 2 lower named prospects for Carrasco and Leone, as the Rays get 2 pitchers that can help them down the stretch to October. This deal helps both teams in my honest opinion.

Summary:

And as the ‘Trade Deadline Outlook’ comes to an end, I will say this, making even half of these deals could help the Mets be a more athletic team, and a better team in my opinion. That should be a main focus in free agency and just overall. With the pitch clock, many older teams have struggled this year, while teams such as the Diamondbacks have popped out of no where because of being young and athletic. Lets summarize the mock trades in addition, and subtraction:

Subtracted:

RHP Justin Verlander

RHP Max Scherzer

RHP David Robertson

RHP Dominic Leone

RHP Carlos Carrasco

OF Mark Canha

OF Tommy Pham

Added:

(From the Robertson deal)

OF Jonny Deluca

OF Jose Ramos

RHP Kyle Hurt

LHP Ben Harris

(From the Pham Deal)

RHP Mark Church

OF Dustin Harris

RHP Winston Santos

(From the Canha Deal)

INF Josh Hood

RHP Jean Munoz

INF/OF José Caballero

(From the Verlander Deal)

RHP Eric Silva

RHP Will Bednar

RHP Ryan Walker

OF Heilot Ramos

(From the Scherzer Deal)

INF/OF Otto Lopez

RHP Hagen Danner

RHP Trent Palmer

LHP Adam Macko

(From the Carrasco/Leone Deal)

RHP Trevor Martin

3B Kamren James

Focusing on adding prospects/younger roster players and selling off older players, is key to this years deadline.
