Bills Free Agency Recap

Heading into free agency, the Bills had less than $10 million in cap space to work with, and they managed to fill the holes on their roster despite multiple pro-bowl players being free agents, Brandon Beane and company managed to stay under the cap while bringing in quality players. We’ll be taking a look at the main significant signings the Bills made.

S Jordan Poyer

There was a decent amount of time early in free agency where it seemed that Jordan Poyer had played his last snaps for Buffalo. Poyer ended up returning to Buffalo to pair up with Micah Hyde again, he signed a 2 year deal that will likely finish his career, the Bills did a good job retaining an all-pro player for a decently cheap contract.

RB Damien Harris

The Bills had a need at the RB2 spot after the departure of Devin Singletary to Houston, and they got a very good deal in signing Damien Harris. Not only getting him away from a division rival on the Patriots, they got him for a very cheap deal. Close to league minimum, Harris can be the big power back the Bills have missed in red zone and short yardage situations. He’ll still likely play behind 2nd year back James Cook, but Harris should be a very solid addition to the RB Room.

DE Leonard Floyd

With Von Miller coming back from a torn ACL, the Bills had a need to bring in a quality veteran edge rusher, and they are getting one in Leonard Floyd. He had 9.0 sacks for the Rams last year, and he is going to be a huge part of the Bills early season pass rush, as we don’t know exactly when Miller will return. Floyd is going to be a huge addition of the edge, his change of direction and his ability to quickly shed blocks and rush the quarterback is going to be very valuable, especially to younger players like Greg Rousseau, and AJ Epenesa.

WR Trent Sherfield

Sherfield is an intriguing addition, he can be used out wide or in the slot. I think Sherfield will end up being the primary slot receiver for the Bills come the beginning of the season. He has amazing speed as well, making his role even more valuable. The Bills have been seeking a stable slot option since the departure of Cole Beasley, and Sherfield could be that guy. Sherfield has excellent speed, and playing in a receiver trio with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle last year, he is an immediate upgrade to the roundabout of slot receivers the Bills had last season.

WR Deonte Harty

Harty was an under the radar signing by the Bills, filling out the receiver room with proven NFL talent was a need this off-season, adding him and Sherfield was a good addition to the room, it’s an improvement over Cole Beasley, Jake Kumerow and John Brown who all played roles last year. Harty has excellent speed, he can be utilized in the slot or out wide. Some have said he can be used in the return game, however I don’t think he will be used in that role, considering he has had some fumbling issues in that role with the Saints over recent years. Harty however does have some injury history, which is why I believe the Bills signed Sherfield as well. If both are healthy, they both could play a good role into the offence.

10 things to know about new Bills OL Connor McGovern

OG Connor McGovern

McGovern was signed within the first week of free agency to a multi-year deal, the former Dallas guard was a huge target for the Bills to fill their offensive line. McGovern is fairly easy to pencil in for the starting left guard spot for the start of the season. After veteran guard Rodger Saffold went to free agency, the Bills pivoted to McGovern, a younger and better option.
