NYR started off their crazy day of free agency with signing recently bought out Blake Wheeler to a one-year, 800k contract. Wheeler had 55 points last year, and will fill a top 9 winger role for NYR but we will get more into analytics later in the article. With the current cap crunch for NYR this deal with Wheeler saved them a lot of cap, instead of paying 2M for a top 9 winger they got one for only 800k. Wheeler can play anywhere in the lineup, it currently seems they brought him in to be on the third line. Lets take a look at the stats!

Great numbers by Wheeler at his age, and he doesn’t have to be a superstar, he just has to produce at a decent level in his expected top 9 role, even putting up half of those numbers it would be huge for NYR.
