Could Islanders target Matt Duchene?

With NHL’s free agency period starting tomorrow afternoon, Predators GM Barry Trotz made a surprising move by waiving Forward Matt Duchene and releasing him to unrestricted free agency, that being said, the Islanders could be a good fit for him.

The Fit

Duchene I believe would be a good fit for the Islanders. And they’ve had interest in him before, declining a deal when he was with Colorado that would have sent Mathew Barzal to the Avalanche, the Isles declined but Duchene would definitely be a good fit on the Islanders top line alongside Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat.

The Contract

Duchene is likely going to get a decent contract in free agency, and after trading Josh Bailey’s $5 million cap hit, the Islanders have enough room to get Duchene while also retaining their pending unrestricted free agents. Duchene, 32, had 22 goals and 34 assists for 56 points for the Nashville Predators last year, and I think the Islanders need to capitalize on the fit.

Isles Lines with Duchene:

Martin-Cizikas-Fasching

All in all, Duchene would be a fantastic for the Islanders as they look to get back to the playoffs for the 2nd straight year, but this time will hope to advance through the first round. An ideal contract would look like a 4 Year deal with an AAV of $4 Million
