Narváez or Nido? Let’s Break It Down

The Mets have an upcoming decision with Omar Narváez a week away from returning, the Mets will have to pick between Tomas Nido and Omar Narváez. Narváez signed in the winter, while Nido has been on the team for awhile. And with Francisco Álvarez has locked up the starting catching spot the Mets will have to make a key decision for #2 Catcher on the depth chart. Narváez nor Nido have MiLB options left so they will have to trade or DFA one of them. Let’s look at some stats and see which one is the best option to stay with the team as the #2 Catcher.

Omar Narváez 2023 Stats:

14 ABs

4 H

2 RBI

.286/.353/.286

.639 OPS

86 wRC+

1.00 BB/K

6 Catcher Framing Runs (2022)

Tomás Nido 2023 Stats:

55 PA

.118/.148/.118

29.1% K%

3.6% BB

1 RBI

-25 wRC+

-0.6 fWAR

The obvious choice here is Narváez, and I believe the stats back that 100%. The Mets should look to move Nido for a depth relief pitcher to a team that desperately needs catching help. Padres could be a suitor, but after claiming Gary Sanchez from the Mets’ it’s likely they will hold off till the deadline.
