Austin Wells needs a promotion

Austin Wells, the Yankees #2 prospect behind Jasson Domínguez, is currently playing for Double-A Somerset, and he has completely conquered the level. Let’s talk about his progression over the last year since being called up to Double-A.

Stats at Double-A Somerset since 2022:

88 Games

306 PAs

18 Home Runs

10.9% BB%

22.7% K%

.268/.350/.570

145 wRC+

Wells has completely conquered the Double-A level and at a rapid pace. His hit and power tools especially have developed at a rapid pace. I’d argue that Wells is major league ready.

Some have stated that Wells won’t remain at catcher long term, but his improved framing and blocking skills could keep him behind the plate for the time being. At the same time, Wells’ offensive progression may force the Yankees hand to call him up. Wells played corner outfield and first base in college, and if needed i’m sure the Yankees would use him similarly to how the Cubs used Kyle Schwarber when he first made the majors. He came up as a catcher but played a lot of outfield, I think that could be in Wells’ future.
