Rangers’ Coaching Candidates

The Rangers fired Head Coach Gerard Gallant after the disappointing first round exit, after building some called a “superteam” to lose in the first round is just not a good look. The organizations exit interviews with players, played a role, meaning that Gallant lost the room and the Rangers had to make a change and they did. Lets look at some potential options for the Rangers to look at/hire.

Mark Messier

The NYR fanbase seems to behind a decision of making the beloved stanley cup winning captain of the 1994 cup winning Rangers team. Messier has never coached before at the professional level nor the junior level, this would be his first time coaching, which might turn NYR from him. While it’s unlikely the Rangers might want to got outside of the box and bring in a great voice for the locker room.

Kris Knoblauch

Knoblauch is the current coach of the AHL affiliate of the Rangers, Hartford Wolf Pack. He coached some games during the covid year when the NYR coaching staff caught the virus. If NYR wants to go internal he would be the go to man for the Rangers but it’s unclear if they will at this time. It currently depends on what the organization is looking at, are they looking for an older veteran coach, or a younger/inexperienced coach. It’s unclear on what they will do. But if they do decide to go younger/inexperienced, Knoblauch seems like the guy for NYR.

Peter Laviolette

Laviolette has been around the league since 2000-2001, and is a stanley cup winning coach with the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2005-2006 season. He and the Capitals parted ways after this past season as this was his 2nd sub .500% pts% season. Laviolette could bring that stanley cup winning experience to the coaching job to a team that is currently in “win now” mode. Like I stated before it all depends on what Chris Drury and the NYR front office is looking at.
