With the 2023 NFL Draft being less than two weeks away, many are wondering and mocking players to a lot of different teams, this draft should be a fun one, but let’s look at the Bills off-season so far and who they could look to take during the draft.

Notable Departures:

G Rodger Saffold
WR Isiah McKenzie
QB Case Keenum
RB Devin Singletary
WR Jamison Crowder
Going into this draft, the Bills have made a few decisions a lot easier for themselves. Lets get into the mock draft.

Round 1, Pick 27
The Pick: OT Darnell Wright – Tennessee
If the Board falls correctly for the Bills, Darnell Wright is an obvious pick at this spot. He’s the day one right tackle and the Bills will have successfully made significant improvements to the offensive line to help protect Josh Allen. Wright didn’t allow a single sack in 2022, and he can help elevate the run game into the secondary while also being a very good pass blocker.

Round 2, Pick 40
Projected Trade with New Orleans:
Saints Get: 59th Pick, 2024 4th round pick
The Pick: LB Trenton Simpson – Clemson
For what has been marked as the top Linebacker for some, is Trenton Simpson. who has been projected as high as the first round but as low as the 2nd round, Clemson would be a surefire replacement for Tremaine Edmunds as he can play a huge part of stopping the run game. Something the Bills struggled with last season especially after Von Miller went down with injury. If the Bills we’re going to trade up in the second round, Simpson would be a guy to do it for.

Round 3, Pick 91
The Pick: TE Luke Schoonmaker – Michigan
In the 3rd round the Bills take a target, a TE2 with the upside to consistency produce at the NFL Level. The Bills haven’t had amazing backups behind current tight end Dawson Knox, but Schoonmaker could change that. He’s a great athletic tight end and his vertical ability is very good for a tight end. He could be a fit in the Bills offence. Schoonmaker is also a good blocker, something the Bills likely value as they want Josh Allen to be protected.

Round 4, Pick 130
The Pick: DL Moro Ojomo – Texas
This pick for the Bills isn’t a pick for 2023, it’s a pick for the years beyond, as they basically have no defensive linemen under contract after next year, Ojomo would be a guy to stabilize that room. At just 21 years old, Ojomo was dominant on the field for the Longhorns. Their defensive line play and pressure rates weren’t the same when he wasn’t on the field. He can be dominant against the run game, and he could be a good fit for the Bills.

Round 5, Pick 137
The Pick: DL Byron Young – Alabama
Just 7 picks after selecting Ojomo, the Bills will continue stacking up on defensive line prospects for the long haul, and they’ll get a good one in Byron Young. The Bama product showed some very exciting flashes for the Crimson Tide this season and showed versatility as he also had some snaps off the edge last year. With Boogie Basham not playing to expectations, the Bills could opt for Young’s services as he’s a younger and potentially more viable option.

Round 6, Pick 205
The Pick: OL Jarrett Patterson – Notre Dame
With the Bills final pick, I think they’ll go for some depth on the offensive line. With the Bills possibly cutting or otherwise parting with Mitch Morse after next season, Patterson would be a good candidate to take over. I think he is a solid depth piece. Many think that he’s a candidate to sit for a year and then come out in 2024 and be a starter in the NFL, I think that’s a possibility for the Bills.
Why no Wide Receiver?
Just as a quick note, I think the Bills are definitely in a position to take a receiver at some point on this draft, however the only receivers I could see them taking in the first round are Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Quentin Johnston. Neither of which I think fall to them, at that point the Bills should focus on their bigger needs.
