Yanks take 2 of 3 from Giants, Phillies Preview

The New York Yankees start off their season strong by taking two out of three from the San Francisco Giants, there were some good performances during this series. And we look forward to the series against the Phillies which starts tomorrow.

Volpe’s Debut

Local kid and #1 Yankees prospect Anthony Volpe made his major league debut as the starting shortstop, and he played pretty well. Recording 3 stolen bases, a pair of hits as well as great plate discipline. Volpe made great swing decisions and didn’t chase much. He looks very good early on.

Stanton Starting Strong

Giancarlo Stanton had himself a weekend. Launching 2 home runs, including a 485 Feet missile that had an exit velocity of 117.8 MPH. Stanton starting strong is essential for the Yankees. If continues to play like this, the Yankees are going to be a forced to be reckoned with.

Gerrit Cole is simply Elite

Gerrit Cole had an Opening Day start for the ages, tossing 6 shutout innings with a Yankee record 11 strikeouts. Cole’s use of the elevated fastball and his great slider was just a part of his great outing, and he’ll start the 3rd game of the series against the Phillies.

Jhony Brito had a great major league debut, tossing 5 shutout innings with 6 strikeouts. The stuff looked really good, his changeup was commanded really well and his fastball was nearly unhittable.

Phillies Preview

The Yankees will face the Phillies for 3 games at Yankee Stadium. The keys to the series against Trea Turner’s Phillies:

– Anthony Volpe first homer watch?

– DJ LeMahieu needs to get it going

– Bullpen getting back on track

The Yankees are riddled with injuries, and they need to stack up as many wins as possible while without Luis Severino and Carlos Rodón. The offence has looked pretty good over the first series, Josh Donaldson, and Gleyber Torres both looked good. The Yankees should be in a good spot against a Phillies team with a pitching staff that struggled against the Texas Rangers.
