The Yankees opened up the season in a very nice way, also in a game where they got a contribution from most of the lineup. Here’s how they won. Gerrit Cole started off his game with a four pitch walk, but then struck out the next three. In the bottom half of the inning, DJ LeMahieu struck out, but Aaron Judge picked up right where he left off last year, opening up his campaign with a long homer to center. Gerrit Cole would then go four innings with 10 strikeouts. Bottom half of the fourth, Josh Donaldson lined a single to left, and Gleyber Torres hit a long homer to right field to make it 3-0 Yankees. Gerrit Cole would go 6 scoreless innings, striking out 11 hitters. Bottom seven, DJ LeMahieu laced an RBI Single to left, and Aaron Judge blooped an RBI Single to center, and the Yankees led 5-0. That’s all the Yankees needed to close it out.

Anthony Volpe’s major league debut was a success, as manager Aaron Boone was pleased, and the fans were pleased with Volpe today. Volpe went 0-2, drew a walk, and stole a base in his debut. Aaron Boone said “He handled himself very well” when asked about how Anthony handled himself today. The Yankees got positive contributions from pretty much everyone in their lineup today, as well. Now at 1-0, the Yankees will have an off day tomorrow, and are back to work on Saturday with Clarke Schmidt on the mound.
Performance of the Day: Gerrit Cole. Todays start from Gerrit Cole was the perfect way to start his season, going 6 innings, no runs allowed, struck out 11, and walked two. He executed his fastball very well, and his changeup very well, while just grooving through the game.
