Off-Season Recap; 2023 Outlook: NL West

The NL West was an interesting division last season, we saw the Dodgers set their franchise record in wins, the Padres make the playoffs for the first time in a full season in quite some time. As well as the drop off of the Giants after winning 107 games in 2021. Let’s Recap the 2022 season.

  1. Los Angeles Dodgers: 111–51

The Dodgers were the best team in baseball last year. No other way to put it. They were by far the most dominant team but like some other recent seasons, they have failed to put it all together in October when everything matters more.

Postseason Finish: Lost NLDS (3–1) to SD

2. San Diego Padres: 89–73

The Padres were a fun team last year. After trading a boatload of prospects for Juan Soto, they made a run in the playoffs despite not having Fernando Tatis Jr. They’ll only be better in 2023, and I think this could be the year the Dodgers are dethroned.

Playoff Finish: Lost NLCS (4–1) to PHI

3. San Francisco Giants: 81–81

The Giants had a very bad year to their standards as a franchise, after a 107-Win season in 2021, it all came crashing down in 2022. They lose LHP Carlos Rodon, they lose the bidding on Aaron Judge, and Carlos Correa. They’re only going to get worse from here, the days are dark out in San Fran.

4. Arizona Diamondbacks: 74–88

The DBacks are a very young team. They’re going to be a very interesting team next year but in 2022 they weren’t too great, outside of Zac Gallen, Daulton Varsho, the late callup of Corbin Carroll, and Christian Walker. The DBacks weren’t a great team last year but they’re poised for a big step forward.

5. Colorado Rockies: 68–94

The Rockies signed Kris Bryant to try to remain competitive in 2022, but after trading Nolan Arenado, and losing Trevor Story, that wasn’t going to happen. The Rockies are by far the worst team in this division and will be for the foreseeable future.

Recapping the Off-season:

Los Angeles Dodgers

Notable Additions:

DH JD Martinez

RHP Noah Syndergaard

RHP JP Feyereisen

OF David Peralta

INF Miguel Rojas

Notable Subtractions:

INF Trea Turner

INF Justin Turner

OF Cody Bellinger

OF Joey Gallo

LHP Tyler Anderson

LHP Andrew Heaney

RHP Craig Kimbrel

RHP Chris Martin

The Dodgers didn’t have a great off-season, but they did everything that they needed to do to remain competitive and to remain towards the top of the National League next season. The reason they did this is because they’re expected to throw a ton of money at Shohei Ohtani next off-season, which makes sense as to why they’d wanna reset their payroll.

San Diego Padres

Notable Additions:

INF Xander Bogearts

DH Nelson Cruz

INF/OF Matt Carpenter

RHP Seth Lugo

RHP Michael Wacha

LHP Cole Hamels

OF Adam Engel

INF Rougned Odor

Notable Departures:

INF/OF Brandon Drury

1B Josh Bell

OF Wil Myers

INF/OF Jurickson Profar

LHP Sean Manaea

RHP Mike Clevinger

The Padres had a pretty good off-season, they probably could’ve spent their money better. However their main concerns are extending OF Juan Soto, San Diego also has interest in Shohei Ohtani next offseason, if they were able to form a lineup consisting of Soto, Machado, Ohtani, Tatis, and Bogearts, that’s just absolutely insane.

San Francisco Giants:

Notable Additions:

RHP Ross Stripling

LHP Sean Manaea

OF Mitch Haniger

OF Michael Conforto

LHP Taylor Rogers

Notable Departures:

3B Evan Longoria

1B Brandon Belt

INF/OF Tommy La Stella

LHP Carlos Rodón

The Giants off-season had the potential to be great. Having signed Arson Judge for about 5 minutes. Heyman got it wrong. They signed Carlos Correa, they voided the contract due to the ankle issue. They tried to keep Rodón, he left for New York. The Giants did what they needed to do to fill the main gaps in their team. They won’t be good next year, But i’m certain they’ll try again for Ohtani next offseason like they did in 2017.

Arizona Diamondbacks:

Notable Additions:

LHP Andrew Chafin

RHP Miguel Castro

OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr

C Gabriel Moreno

OF Kyle Lewis

Notable Departures:

C/OF Daulton Varsho

OF David Peralta

RHP Ian Kennedy

The DBacks had a nice off-season, though trading Varsho isn’t the best move, they have a bunch of young pieces coming up like Corbin Carroll and Alek Thomas, among others. they’re poised for a big jump. Kyle Lewis is an interesting addition as well, he hasn’t been healthy since his ROTY season in 2020. Looks like Arizona thinks he can return to that form.

Colorado Rockies:

Notable Additions:

RHP Dinelson Lamet

RHP Conor Seabold

OF Jurickson Profar

Notable Departures:

OF Connor Joe

RHP Carlos Estevez

The Rockies had a typical Rockies off-season, they didn’t make any big moves, they didn’t really do much. They’re going to be a bad team next year. No other way to sugar coat it.
