Off-season recap, 2023 Outlook: NL East

The 2022 Season in the NL East was pretty competitive, 3 of the 5 made the playoffs and the Phillies ended up winning the pennant. These teams got a lot better as well. Let’s recap 2022 first.

Atlanta Braves (101–61)
The Braves were very good last year, though they didn’t win the NL, they fought back from a 10+ game deficit in the divisional race and ended up dethroning the Mets in the final week of the season, they’ll be World Series contenders next year for sure.
Playoff Finish: Lost NLDS 3–1 to PHI

New York Mets (101–61)
The Mets last year were overwhelming favorites in the NL East, after signing Max Scherzer. It didn’t go as planned, but they got a bit better this off-season and will look to run it back.
Postseason finish: Lost NLWC 2–1 to SD

Philadelphia Phillies: (87–75)
The Phillies were a surprise team last year, after the firing of Joe Girardi, the Phillies stormed into Red October and got all the way to the World Series, they got a lot better this off-season and will look to run it back.
Postseason Finish: Lost WS 4–2 to HOU

Miami Marlins: (69–93)
The Marlins were underwhelming last year, the main bright spots of last season were SPs Sandy Alcantara and Pablo Lopez, their offence is not very good and didn’t perform very well at all.

Washington Nationals: 55–107
The Nationals did one thing right last season, and that was getting an absolute HAUL for Juan Soto. The package that they got is going to end up paying dividends for them in a couple of years, and that could be their claim back to winning baseball when those prospect start having an impact at the big league level.
Recapping the Off-season

Atlanta Braves:

OF Sam Hilliard
Notable Departures:
INF Dansby Swanson
C William Contrearas
OF Adam Duvall
RHP Kenley Jansen
Darren O’Day
OF Robbie Grossman
The Braves had a nice off-season, they filled their gaps besides letting Swanson walk. Locking up everybody long term is still amazing as well. They did a great job solidifying a bullpen that was riddled with injuries in 2022. The Braves are arguably the National League favorites right now. That team is simply stacked.

New York Mets
Notable Additions:
RHP Justin Verlander
RHP Kodai Senga
LHP Jose Quintana
OF Tommy Pham
OF Brandon Nimmo
RHP David Robertson
Notable Departures:
RHP Jacob DeGrom
RHP Chris Bassitt
RHP Taijuan Walker
RHP Seth Lugo
RHP Trevor Williams
LHP Joely Rodriguez
RHP Trevor May
RHP Mychal Givens
The Mets had an okay off-season, it would’ve been a lot better given they finalized a deal with Carlos Correa, pitching was never their weakness but they didn’t improve their lineup almost at all. Their pitching was already their biggest stregnth, they needed more lineup help.

Philadelphia Phillies:
Notable Additions:
INF Trea Turner
RHP Taijuan Walker
LHP Matt Strahm
LHP Gregory Soto
INF Josh Harrison
Notable Departures:
INF Jean Segura
OF Matt Vierling
RHP Kyle Gibson
RHP Noah Syndergaard
RHP Zach Eflin
The Phillies had a great off-season. Adding Turner was a necessity and they added a lot of firepower to that lineup, adding multiple bullpen arms was a good move for them as well as it was really needed.

Miami Marlins:
Notable Additions:
INF Luis Arraez
RHP JT Chargois
RHP Johnny Cueto
INF Jean Segura
Notable Departures:
INF Miguel Rojas
1B Jesus Aguilar
RHP Pablo Lopez
Miami had a decent off-season, Getting Arraez provides an opportunity for RHP Edward Cabrera to get a shot in the rotation after the departure of Pablo Lopez, he’s expected to be a pretty good starter.

Washington Nationals:
Notable Additions:
INF Jeter Downs
Notable Departures:
DH Nelson Cruz
The Nationals are really young, but also really bad. They’re essentially waiting for prospects like Robert Hassell, James Wood, and Brady House to come up. until then they’re gonna be picking top 3 in the draft for a few more years.
