Anthony Volpe in Lead For Yankees Shortstop Job

According to reports, top Yankees prospect Anthony Volpe could currently be in the lead in the Yankees shortstop competition between himself and fellow top prospect Oswald Peraza, as well as the incumbent Isiah Kiner-Falefa who hasn’t started a game at shortstop in more than two weeks.

Volpe is single-handedly forcing the Yankees hand to put him on the opening day roster. Performing to expectations in all ways. His most important aspect of his game this spring has to be the plate discipline. He has one of the more advanced eyes among prospects, and has the offensive upside to be one of the best shortstops in all of baseball. His above average defence and elite baserunning tools help his case as well, there’s a real chance he’s the first rookie to start for the Yankees on opening week day since 2017 Aaron Judge. Aaron Boone stated that the Yankees “Will likely know” Who the Shortstop is upon their departure from Tampa on Monday.

Heading into Spring Training, the shortstop job was viewed as Oswald Peraza’s “to lose”. It’s safe to say he might’ve lost that job, the Yankees infield logjam makes it difficult to fit both on the roster, and has received negative comments from Yankees manager Aaron Boone, for Volpe (and Peraza) to make the roster, two of Gleyber Torres, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Josh Donaldson would have to be moved. Though it’s possible, i’d imagine the Yankees would opt for Peraza on opening day until they can clear the logjam. But I would love to see Anthony Volpe starting on Opening Day next Thursday.

With how good Volpe has played this spring, I find it very hard to believe the Yankees will keep him off the roster. He’s not on the 40-man roster, but you can create roster spots by playing RHPs Frankie Montas and Luis Gil on the 60-Day IL. And it’s been noted, if Volpe makes the roster, he’s not going to ride the bench. He’s going to be playing every day.
