Patriots Interview Offensive Coordinator Candidates

The search for a new play-caller in Foxboro is officially underway. After the team uncharacteristically put out a statement last week that they would be conducting interviews to fill offensive coordinator, the time has come. Here is what we know about the search.

Bill O’Brien Update

The one name the organization and fans have been calling for is Bill O’Brien, who as of beginning of the week, did not have anything scheduled. It was reported that the team conducted an interview with O’Brien early Thursday morning and it “went smoothly”. O’Brien, who spent the last two seasons calling plays for the Alabama Crimson Tide, was the Patriots Offensive Coordinator from 2009-2011. He is considered a top candidate and the front-runner for the position.

Pats Put In Formal Interview Requests

The past few days, the Patriots have put in three interview requests for the vacant offensive coordinator position. Minnesota Vikings wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell, Arizona Cardinals associate head coach and wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson, and University of Oregon offensive line coach Adrian Klemm have gotten the attention of the Patriots higher ups. All three candidates have ties to Bill Belichick and will be interviewing on Friday.

Nick Caley Getting Noticed

One name that has been a popular around the league is Patriots tight end coach Nick Caley. He not only interviewed to be the teams play-caller, but took an interview with the division rival New York Jets for the same position. Owner Robert Kraft is very high on Caley who has been on the staff since 2015 and would like to keep him on the coaching staff, and promoting him to offensive coordinator is under serious consideration.

The Patriots want to wrap the search up and a decision could be made very soon. From my understanding, the clear cut favorite is Bill O’Brien, but he seems to have many coaching options throughout the league. As of right now there is no indication who is leading the way behind O’Brien. All we know is this, whoever gets hired as the new play-caller in Foxboro, they have a lot of work to do.
