Yankees get Gerrit Cole back; Sign Free Agent LHP Tim Hill

The Yankees lost an extra innings thriller last night to Baltimore last night, 7-6 in ten innings. New York would’ve loved to have that game, but the most important news is that the reigning Cy Young Winner is back, and he was SHARP. The Yankees’ ace went 4 IP, struck out five, including 5 of his last 6 outs being via the K, allowed two runs, and walked one. He threw 62 pitches, 41 for strikes. This rotation, already being stacked, added the AL Cy Young. Luis Gil (9-1, 2.03 ERA) starts today in a big series finale against the Baltimore Orioles.

Earlier this morning, the Yankees agreed to a deal with LHP submariner Tim Hill. Before he got released from Chicago, Hill put up a 5.87 ERA, and a WHIP of 2.22. The Yankees have lacked left-handed pitching out of the pen, and they get a guy who is very ground ball oriented. Yankees’ pitching coach Matt Blake works very well with pitchers like that. Hill gets ground balls 63.8% of the time, which ranks in the 98th percentile, and doesn’t get hit hard, allowing ONE barrel on 94 balls put in play, which is 1.1% of the time, ranking in the 99th percentile. Tim Hill has the potential to be a contributor out of this Yankee bullpen.
